Soft Light & Timeless Family Moments at Cox Arboretum
The Nichols family session at Cox Arboretum had some of the best lighting I’ve seen all season. It was one of those perfectly cloudy days where the light stays soft and even, with just enough brightness peeking through to create that dreamy glow. This type of lighting is ideal for family photography, and Cox Arboretum delivered beautifully.
From the start, this session felt effortless and joyful — exactly what you hope for during a family session.
Thoughtful Outfit Choices That Photograph Beautifully
Color coordination plays such a big role in creating timeless family photos, and the Nichols family nailed it. Mom wore a gorgeous brown dress that blended beautifully with the natural surroundings, while Dad opted for light-colored shorts and a soft-toned shirt. Their boys were dressed just as thoughtfully — the youngest in a blue shirt that perfectly matched his bright blue eyes, and his older brother in a pale green shirt that complemented the scenery.
The result was a cohesive color palette that photographed beautifully against the greenery of Cox Arboretum.
A Well-Rounded Family Session Experience
During every family session, I prioritize variety. We started with full family portraits, then captured mom and dad together, individual portraits of each child, and sibling moments. This approach ensures families receive a gallery that feels complete and tells the full story of their season of life.
We explored several areas of Cox Arboretum, taking advantage of the gardens, walking paths, and open spaces along the way.
Celebrating a First Birthday with a Cake Smash
We ended the session with a cake smash — one of my favorite ways to celebrate a first birthday. Turning one is such a big milestone, and capturing this stage is always so special. Some little ones dive right into the cake, while others approach it with caution… and this sweet kiddo was a little bit of both.
From curious fingers to frosting-covered toes, I love photographing every detail — the cake itself, the messy hands, the tiny reactions, and the joyful chaos that comes with it all.
Why Cake Smash Sessions Are Worth It
Cake smash sessions add such a fun and meaningful layer to family photography. They mark an important milestone while keeping the experience playful and relaxed. Whether it’s a big reaction or gentle curiosity, every child responds differently — and that’s what makes these sessions so unique.
The Nichols family session was the perfect blend of connection, style, and celebration.
